With the cerascreen® Long-term Blood Sugar Test (HbA1c) you can determine your HbA1c value, which is the degree to which sugar has attached itself to your red blood cells, in a process called glycation. This value may be an indication of your average blood glucose levels, and therefore of a possible pre-clinical or fully-fledged diabetes.

The Advantages Of The Long-Term Blood Sugar Test

Image Box Section 1 Image Box Section 1

High blood sugar levels can be difficult to notice at first - often levels have been  too high for a long time before we even notice anything is amiss. Evaluating your long-term blood sugar value (HbA1c) is a reliable way to keep tabs on your blood sugar levels, assess your risk of diabetes and, if necessary, take countermeasures at an early stage.

For the cerascreen ® Blood Sugar Test, you do not have to visit a doctor's office and you don’t have to wait. With a small prick ofyour finger, you can take a few drops of blood at home and then send in your sample for experts to evaluate in our CLIA-certified partner lab.

Benefit from our expertise: cerascreen ® is the market leader for medical sampling and return kits in Europe, with 8 years of experience in developing and evaluating tests. We have developed more than 50 approved test kits (medical devices), evaluated hundreds of thousands of samples, and serve 19 countries and counting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Long-Term Blood Sugar

  • Why should I test HbA1c?

Today's eating and drinking habits and the consumption of alcohol and cigarettes are contributing to more and more cases of obesity and the development of type 2 diabetes. With diabetes, blood sugar stays permanently high. With the HbA1c test, you can determine your average blood sugar over the last three months.

Early identification of high blood sugar levels is crucial so you can take proactive steps to improve things. For example, you can make targeted changes to your diet and incorporate more exercise into your daily routine.

  • How does the test work?

For the Blood Sugar Test, you will take a small blood sample from your fingertip using a lancet. Then send the sample to our CLIA-certified partner laboratory in a tube using the prepaid return envelope. The laboratory will examine the proportion of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) tototal hemoglobin and thus the degree of glycation in your blood.

  • What does the results report tell me?

The HbA1c test tells you how much HbA1c is in your blood. This can be used to determine the average blood sugar level that you had over the past three months.

Your score falls into one of three ranges:

    • Less than 5.7 percent: blood sugar is in the normal range.
    • 5.7 to 6.5 percent: this is a gray area and you should clarify your diabetes risk with a doctor.
    • More than 6.5 percent: dangerously high value and you should definitely clarify the possibility of diabetes with your doctor.
  • What recommendations do I get?

The results report provides you with tips that you can use to counteract high blood sugar levels and thus possibly avoid diabetes.

For example, it might be recommended that you avoid sugar in your diet, reduce stress levels and anxiety triggers, and/or continue to regularly check your HbA1c levels.

If you suspect you have diabetes or if you have a high risk of diabetes, you should also consult a doctor.

  • What is the HbA1c value?

Hemoglobin is the red blood pigment that serves as an oxygen transporter in human blood. Residues of glucose, the sugar in the blood, stick to the hemoglobin for at least 30 days. Experts call the mixture of blood pigment and glucose hemoglobin A1c or HbA1c.

A blood sample is used to determine how much HbA1c is present in the blood and how large the proportion of HbA1c is to the total hemoglobin. The percentage that indicates this proportion is the HbA1c value (also called long-term blood sugar or the degree of glycation of the blood).

  • What are the symptoms of high blood sugar?

The symptoms of high blood sugar are often  difficult to see. Often people get used to the fluctuations in blood sugar until they no longer notice the consequences. This is also often the case if you already have type 2 diabetes.

However, there are some typical symptoms of hypoglycemia:

    • Increased need to urinate
    • Strong feeling of thirst
    • Fatigue
    • Headache
  • How does hypoglycemia manifest itself?

Blood sugar that is too low can also be problematic as then the blood cannot provide enough glucose through the body (which means that the brain lacks energy, among other things). This can happen because of high stress, extreme physical strain, and alcohol consumption. Even strict fasting can lower blood sugar too much, especially in type 1 diabetics.

    Possible symptoms of hypoglycemia:

    • Weak knees
    • Racing heart, profuse sweating, chills
    • Cravings
    • Tiredness and difficulty concentrating
    • Confusion and anxiety attacks
  • Why do we have sugar in our blood?

Blood sugar (glucose) is an important part of our energy metabolism. The sugar glucose provides the energy that our body needs to function. For example, glucose reaches the brain via the blood.

The hormone insulin plays an important role in this: It controls how much sugar gets from the blood into the body's cells. It also regulates the blood sugar level and, in healthy people, ensures that the value is always within the normal range. If there is not enough insulin in the body, blood sugar rises.

  • Who is the test not suitable for?

The Blood Sugar Test is not or only to a limited extent suitable for certain groups of people:

    1. People with infectious diseases such as hepatitis and HIV may not take test.
    2. People with hemophilia should not do the blood test.
    3. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should only carry out the long-term blood sugar test under medical supervision. The reference values and recommendations do not apply to you either, so you should obtain recommendations on the test results from your doctor or therapist.
    4. The long-term blood sugar test is not suitable for children under 18 years of age
    5. The test is not intended to diagnose or treat disease. For example, if you have unexplained weight loss or are severely obese, consult a doctor.
